Access Evaluation of Digital Libraries: Characteristics and Performance of Web OPACs

This paper addresses two major challenges of powerful meta search systems within the area of literature services: accessing services over their public Web interfaces and coping with portions of information. We start by identifying three significant classes of literature services and describe their information splitting policies. Then, we present the results of two experiments: In the first experiment we survey response times of different literature services and different kinds of queries. In the second experiment we analyse two selected queries in detail and discuss a typical delay profile of a Web OPAC. We approximate this delay profile by means of a Weibull distribution. Finally, we present a simulation tool for Web OPACs, which incorporates the insights and results found by our experiments.
